My inner guidance and the piano/keyboard

I came to music late in my life. I was 26 when I first was drawn to play the piano. I would be walking or driving and often out of no were, piano stores would appear along my path. It was a time of great change for me, a Saturn return, if you will and I was searching for my chief goal in life. A life purpose to keep my wild mind and creative appetite in check and something to fulfill my soul. I actually put signs on my bathroom mirror and car dash board that read, “What Is My Chief Goal In Life”. I would shyly walk into these piano stores and tap on a note or two and then quickly scamper out without attracting to much attention. This went on for a month or so. Look a piano store, poof, another and another. I ended up renting a nice Yamaha upright and I will always remember the day I cam home from work and it was sitting there waiting for me to play it. I sat down and immediately started to figure it out, just making sound, following the notes and my intuition. I sat at that piano for at least 6 hrs that night literally loosing my mind to the point I was drooling on the keyboard. I was totally possessed by the sound and vibration. Within a few weeks or so I was being asked by neighbors, “who was playing the piano”? I would answer like, “O, sorry I will keep down”. They would say “no, no, it sounds great”. After a few months of playing by ear and teaching my self, I was actually composing songs. This experience was the catalyst that prompted me to throw caution to the wind, to give up my reliable 9 to 5 job, move to an unknown city and pursue a life of music, sound and the creative arts. Since that time I have not owned another piano though would always take advantage of one when in my presence.

First Rain is a piano improvisation that was inspired by the first rain of 2020. It captures the feeling I had looking out my studio window. A crack in time when all slows down and nature unfolds its gifts. My super talented friend Jon Ossman added a piccolo bass, Guitar pad and synth pad. Enjoy……..
